Hohenzollern Castle
Hohenzollern Mount is situated 50 kilometres from Stuttgart, Baden-Württemberg. A wonderful castle stands on the top of it. In the Middle Ages, it was the residence of the Hohenzollerns, who had ruled there for ages.
The castle was built in the 11th century, but as most of the medieval buildings, soon it faced very hard times. Over its history, the castle complex was rebuilt three times. Today, the castle is a private estate, which is still belonging to descendants of the Hohenzollerns.
There are about 100 halls and rooms in the castle. The library, the emperor’s bedroom and the luxury empress’ restroom are of particular interest. Besides, there’s a huge collection of paintings, silver and china ware.
A great number of historical items and unique antiques are kept within the castle, which for a long time was considered the symbol of power in Prussia. The Crown of William II, private belongings of the dynasty’s representatives can be seen in the castle.
Tourists are attracted not only by the luxury of the kings’ residence, but also by fantastic views from the top of the mountain. However, it’s not easy to reach the castle. Climbing the stairs on the steep slope may take half an hour. You are advised to take a tourist bus, which can carry you from the foot of the mountain to the castle for around €2. It operates from 9:00 am till 6:30 pm in summer, and the winter time table depends on weather.
The complex is open for visitors from 10:00 am till 5:30 pm (16 March – 31 October) and from 10:00 am till 4:30 pm (1 November – 15 March). The excursion around the castle costs about €10, and there’re also cheaper tickets which include the castle’s outside territory sightseeing only.
You can get to the castle by train from Stuttgart, getting off at Hechingen Station, which is situated in a small town at the foot of Hohenzollern Mountain. The trip will take you around an hour, and then you’ll have to take an excursion bus, which will bring you to the castle.
